BPAT Process
The BPAT assessment process provides multiple benefits for breeding institutions:-
BPAT will evaluate and support CG/NARES breeding networks to deliver better products, potential reach among farmers, adoption strategies and drive greater impact in farmer fields. BPAT will assess the Networks via an anchoring CG center, however, face to face BPAT assessments will occur at the hub of each CG/NARES network. However, the BPAT team can be made available at the request of NARES partners who operate larger breeding programs should they request a BPAT assessment. BPATs will be for crops only (not livestock or fish) and intensive evaluations will be restricted to the networks GF support.
BPAT will align directly with Breeding for Tomorrow (B4T), a major CG initiative that has commenced in 2025. An improved BPAT assessment methodology will minimize disruption to breeding teams while capturing and utilizing meaningful data. A data-driven approach that leverages existing CG-developed will be used to assess breeding program vital signs. Reports will be electronically generated and include a dashboard detailing breeding program status relative to previous assessments and other breeding programs combined with a clear set of forward-looking solutions and innovative approaches. This methodology will aim to provide rapid, actionable feedback, directly in line with CG/donors/BPAT’s vision for continuous improvement.
BPAT will continue to follow up on past recommendations to ensure sustained progress and use modelling/Artificial Intelligence wherever possible to predict future performance of breeding programs. This new process will enable BPAT to provide a more evidence-based analysis of breeding program effectiveness. The new BPAT approach will specifically target those parts of the product development and release strategy are sound and delivering the required impact. BPAT will become a tool not just for monitoring, but for fostering innovation within CGIAR breeding programs.
